Traveling Gavel

What is it?  The purpose of the Traveling Gavel is to promote fraternity among Council’s. Each council will receive the gavel from the previous Council during a regular business meeting and, in turn, present it to the next scheduled Council at their business meeting. A minimum of three (3) Brothers should go with the gavel and stay for the presenting Council meeting and it is highly recommended that they stay through the whole meeting if possible. It is also recommended that the Grand Knight be informed beforehand that the gavel will be at his next Council meeting.

Order of Presentation

Presentation of the gavel should be done immediately after the call to order and the Warden’s report. In other words, the traveling gavel should be used for the rest of the meeting, beginning with the call to prayer. The visiting representative should gain the attention of the Grand Knight with the proper salute. After being recognized, the visiting representative should come forward and would read the following:

Worthy Grand Knight and brothers of ___________ Council: We bring with us, the Traveling Gavel from the State Council of North Carolina in the name of our Founder, Father Michael J. McGivney. This gavel is symbolic of our devotion to God, the Blessed Virgin Mary, our Holy Catholic Church, and the service to our fellow man, through the many hours devoted to those less fortunate than us. It is a reminder that not one Council, yet collectively, all councils continue to assist those in distress, the disabled, and the handicapped.

As this gavel travels from Council to Council, may it bring our brotherhood closer together. I now present the Traveling Gavel of the North Carolina State Knights of Columbus Council on behalf of our Worthy State Deputy David Jones.

At this time, the Traveling Gavel should be handed to the Grand Knight and the meeting then should proceed with the call to prayer (4 raps) and the gavel used until completion of the business meeting. The receiving Council should then plan to present to the next Council. The last Council in each district will return it to their DD.
