KofC 9039 Adopt-A-Highway Program
Members of Our Lady of the Rosary Council 9039 of St. Brendan's Parish in Shallotte, NC, started a new council community initiative with the assistance of the NC Department of Transportation called Adopt-A-Highway program. Brother Knight Ken Waldron worked with the NCDOT to coordinate and define our section of a road to clean of litter and debris. The Adopt-A-Highway will highlight the Councils community participation and good works by providing KofC Council 9039 signage along a 1.8 mile section of Old Georgetown Rd in Ocean Isle Beach NC. This is a popular section of road leading to this beach-front community, and the signage will be viewed by many travelers and locals alike. On the inaugural quarterly clean-up, thirteen Brothers collected 24 bags of litter and several tires along a 1.8-mile section of Old Georgetown Road. The NC DOT Adopt-A-Highway is a volunteer program established in 1988, and since inception, tens of thousands of volunteers have reduced litter and saved taxpayers millions of dollars annually in roadside cleanup costs. We are happy that we can contribute as a KofC Council to these efforts.
