The Tar Heel Knight
TKO, Total Knight Outlook

The church was empty. It had been closed for years and years, deemed unsafe for worship. Since then, the parish has gathered in a school gym—faithful, resilient, and patient. But stepping inside the old church felt different. It was as if everyone had disappeared all at once. Missals still rested in the pews. A box of tissues sat still waiting to wipe away tears of sorrow or joy. Sheet music remained on the stand for the choir director. Gone. Vanished. And yet, not empty. What lingered were the prayers, decades of whispered hopes, joyful hymns and words of thanksgiving. You could feel it. Faith had soaked into the walls. God’s love and grace still permeated the space, silently echoing through what was once holy ground and still is.
That raises a question that cannot be ignored:
Can something be done?
I believe the answer is yes. Not immediately. Not alone. Not by human strength alone. But over time, together with the parish, the diocese, and by the grace of God absolutely
something
can be done.
The difference lies in outlook. There is a mindset that accepts circumstances as final. And then there is a mindset that sees obstacles as something to be confronted, not denied, not ignored, but overcome with purpose and faith. There is a choice between living in the past and moving forward on mission. Scripture reminds us of the man who walks in darkness yet sees a great light. That light is not of his own making. It is God’s.
His will be done.
This is what I believe is the
TKO
, the
Total Knight Outlook
.
It is an outlook rooted in impact. One man alone cannot do everything, but several men in a parish can do far more than they imagine. Several councils, working together, can change the trajectory of communities. Multiply that by twenty thousand men across a state or 2.2 million across the world. Suddenly the outlook of one man becomes a force for good, hope, and renewal. TKO is not bravado. It is conviction.
Faith
A Total Knight seeks the will and enlightenment of God. He is a high-impact man because he is deeply rooted in faith. He desires to spread the Good News, not merely with words, but with his life. He allows himself to be continuously transformed by God’s love and grace. This is the foundation, our connection to something far greater than ourselves.
Family
A Total Knight builds relationships with intention. That may be his biological family, his extended family, or his council family, but none are accidental. He seeks Christ in the people around him. This is where fidelity is forged, joy is discovered, and leadership is refined. To be true brothers and real fathers, this is where it begins.
Mission
A Total Knight is guided by purpose. His mission is God-given and shaped by the vision of Blessed Father McGivney: charity that acts, unity that binds, fraternity that endures. It is a mission that cares for widows and orphans, lifts the marginalized, defends faith, and strengthens families. It is not a program; it is a calling.
The empty church still speaks. The echoes remain, waiting for men who are willing not only to listen, but to act.
I invite you to take on the
Total Knight Outlook
. Be a high impact man and invite others to walk beside you with the same vision. There is something undeniably powerful about men facing the same direction, united in purpose. A shared mission becomes a true force multiplier.
By God’s grace, what once appeared abandoned can rise again, not only in brick and mortar, but in faith renewed, families strengthened, and mission fully lived. It takes the right outlook to see what is possible in Christ and through the mission of the Knights of Columbus. It takes a
