Damien O’Connor Inspires at the 2024 North Carolina Knights of Columbus Convention
The 2024 North Carolina Knights of Columbus Convention was graced with an unforgettable keynote address by Damien O’Connor, the Vice President of Faith and Evangelization. His speech was a highlight of an already amazing event, leaving attendees deeply inspired and reflecting on their own journeys of faith and service.
Damien began his address with a poignant story from earlier in his career. Assigned to teach a notoriously difficult class, he faced students who were determined to drive him away, just as they had with his predecessor. Frustrated and ready to give up, Damien turned to the administration for support. Their response was both surprising and profound: “Damien, you may be the only way that they encounter Christ.” This simple
yet powerful statement transformed his perspective, reinforcing the importance of perseverance and embodying Christ’s love, even in the most challenging situations.
In his second story, Damien shared a deeply personal chapter of his life. He recounted the emotional journey he and his wife, Monica, faced when both of their children were diagnosed with autism. The initial shock and devastation led them to drift away from the Church. However, in a beautiful twist of faith, they were drawn back by the innocent words of one of their children during Mass: “Hello Jesus,” spoken to the Eucharist. This
moment of pure, untainted recognition of Christ’s presence reignited their faith and commitment to the Church.
Damien O’Connor’s stories perfectly encapsulate the spirit and mission of the Knights of Columbus. The gift of membership in this esteemed organization offers countless opportunities to encounter Christ in everyday actions and community service. Through Eucharistic processions, Masses for veterans, and various charitable activities, the presence of Christ is made manifest.
For instance, every time a coat is given to a child in need, Christ’s compassion is felt. When members visit men in prison, they bring Christ’s hope and redemption. As they build beds for children who have none, Christ watches over these young souls, providing comfort and security.
The Knights of Columbus stand as a testament to living out the Gospel through action. Damien O’Connor’s keynote address was not just a highlight of the convention; it was a powerful reminder that every member can make a difference in the world. By embodying Christ in their daily lives, they continue to fulfill their mission of charity, unity, and fraternity, making Christ present in every act of kindness and service.
