The Tar Heel Knight

The Closing Ode

Author: Sergio Miranda

Saturday March 01, 2025

As I closed the cover of the fifth book, it was time for bed. This was the parent-enforced—but often waffled—limit on bedtime stories. My daughter knew she had reached the limit, so instead of asking for just one more, she asked for a song.

“Sing me a song, please, Daddy?”

I considered the request for a long moment, then began to sing:

“Now our evening’s work is done,
Then let us every one,
Join in song.”

I finished with a flourish, probably too majestic for bedtime. My daughter looked up sleepily and asked, “Is this the Knights of Columbus song?” She drifted off before hearing the answer.

“Long may our Order stand
Foremost in this free land,
Ready with heart and hand
To right each wrong.”

Within those lyrics lay a long legacy of standing up for families—doing all we can for the good of the Order, our country, and our communities.

“We have a mission great,
True to our Church and State,
Onward we move.”

We, the men of the Knights of Columbus, are entrusted with a God-given mission, one that began with an unassuming parish priest named Father McGivney. Our strength comes not from one, but from a fraternity of Catholics united in faith, giving of themselves in the ultimate act of charity.

“We dry the mourner’s tear,
The tired heart we cheer.”

As I pulled the covers tighter over my sleeping daughter, I reflected on this unlimited love—motivated by faith and passed down through generations—now finding its way into a simple bedtime tune.

Lent is coming, a time once again for spiritual introspection and, hopefully, transformation. Our faith is not meant to be hidden under a basket; it is one that requires many. Surround yourself with good people and family. Invite another to join you on this faith-filled journey. Ask that man to become a Knight.

“Faith in our works appear,
Upheld by Love.”
