Tales from the Road: Integrity

There are many people you meet along the way. Some leave an impression that fades with time, and others leave you with a quality worth admiring, a virtue worth emulating. Among all the virtues we encourage within the Knights of Columbus, integrity stands as one of the pillars of true leadership. Without integrity, there is no lasting leadership, no trust, and no foundation upon which faith or fraternity can stand.
I often think of the story of Saint John Paul II’s father, a man whose quiet devotion shaped the soul of a saint. The young Karol Wojtyła would sometimes rise early in the morning or stay up late into the night, only to find his father on his knees in prayer, praying his rosary in the stillness of the dark. No audience. No applause. Just a man doing what is right simply because it is right. That’s integrity: consistency of character, especially when no one is watching.
Recently, I’ve been on the road for work — countless flights, hotel rooms, and long days that blend together. On one trip, I was accompanied by a brother in Christ, a young man you might not immediately take for a deeply spiritual soul. As we talked late into the evening, adjusting to the time zone difference, he mentioned he was reading from the Book of Ezekiel to pass the time. Our conversation quickly turned to the visions and mysteries within that prophetic book — the wheels, the angels, the powerful imagery of God’s presence. It was one of those moments that can only be guided by the Holy Spirit. We were far from home, connected not by work, but by faith. Who else brings a Bible on a business trip? That, to me, is integrity. When there’s no one to impress, no credit to earn, and every reason to relax, yet you choose instead to deepen your faith. That’s when someone’s true self is revealed.
With another stop along the journey, I saw a brother Knight at Mass. We’ve been in the same council for years. We fried fish side by side, cleaned the parish grounds together, served meals at the homeless shelter shoulder to shoulder. That morning, he was up front, quietly waiting for Mass to begin. I greeted him warmly, “Good morning, brother!” He smiled gently and replied, “Hello, my name is Charles.” In that moment, I realized that dementia had taken our shared memories away. Yet what struck me most was what remained — a man still faithful, still present, still dutiful in his service to the Church. His integrity, his quiet devotion, the quality that brought us together, had not been lost to the illness. It still endures, steady and unshaken.
Integrity is what you do when no one is looking. It’s prayer in the dark, faith in the quiet, and service even when the world forgets your name. As we journey through this fraternal year, may your integrity remain strong. Our work is for the Lord and through Him, and in Him, we are able to do all the amazing works of the Knights.
Thank you, brothers, for all that you do, and for who you are, both when the world is watching and when it is not.
Vivat Jesus!
