Becoming Fishers of Men

In Matthew 4:19, Jesus called out to His disciples, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” This powerful statement, echoed in Mark 1:17 and reinforced by John’s depiction of the risen Christ by the Sea of Tiberias (John 21:1-14), lies at the heart of the mission of the Knights of Columbus. Just as the disciples were called to follow Christ and bring others into His fold, we too are called to extend this invitation to men around us, drawing them into the brotherhood of faith.

The concept of being a “fisher of men” is rooted in evangelization and personal connection. In Luke 5:10, Jesus reassured Simon Peter, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.” As Knights, we take up this same call, offering membership not just as an opportunity to belong, but as a way to live out our Christian mission more fully. Membership in the Knights of Columbus is an invitation to deepen one’s faith, build lasting fraternity, and actively serve others in need.

Much like the act of fishing itself, bringing men into the fold requires patience, skill, and dedication. Anyone who has ever tried fishing knows that it’s an art that demands both preparation and persistence. Similarly, inviting others to join our Order can seem challenging at times, but the rewards are great. While not every invitation will result in immediate success, each outreach plants a seed—just as the apostles cast their nets repeatedly, trusting that Jesus would guide them to a catch.

In the early days of Christianity, the fish became a symbol of faith. When early Christians met someone, they would draw a simple arch on the ground. If the other person completed the symbol with their own arch, forming the image of a fish, they knew they had encountered a fellow believer. This ancient gesture of mutual recognition reminds us of the strength that comes from being part of a faith community. Today, the Knights of Columbus continue this tradition, building a strong brotherhood that draws strength from shared beliefs and mutual support.

When one man “fishes” for another, inviting him into the Knights, and that man in turn invites someone else, it creates a virtuous cycle of faith, service, and fraternity. Each new member strengthens the Order, brings fresh energy to our charitable efforts, and expands our ability to serve Christ through our works.

The importance of membership cannot be overstated. Just as Jesus called His disciples by name to follow Him, we are called to invite others to join our mission. The Knights of Columbus offers a way to follow Christ more closely, to be "fishers of men" in the modern world, and to help build a Church that is strong, vibrant, and ready to serve the needs of all.

I invite you to register for a special online seminar: Becoming Fishers of Men

Join us on Tuesday, October 1 for a fraternal training online seminar about renewing our culture of invitation and becoming “Fishers of Men” for the Knights of Columbus. We’ll discuss:

  • Why it’s time to build

  • How to extend the invitation

  • New and updated resources to support Church Drives

  • Tips and best practices for inviting men to join, from a successful recruiter

If you can't join live, it will be available on-demand afterwards. Be sure to sign-up to ensure you get this important information: https://goto.webcasts.com/viewer/event.jsp?ei=1688661
