Program Purpose

Help change the lives of people with disabilities worldwide by having your council donate at least $150USD in the US and $195CAD in Canada for a wheelchair. Through partnerships, councils can purchase a large container of 280 wheelchairs for their own donation sites. A featured program, Global Wheelchair Mission, counts for two credits toward the Columbian Award.

The Order's wheelchair program reached a major milestone in late 2020, surpassing more than 100,000 wheelchairs since the first donation 18 years ago.

Program Overview

The Knights of Columbus has been partners with the American Wheelchair Mission since 2003 and Canadian Wheelchair Foundation since 2006, under the umbrella of the Global Wheelchair Mission. This initiative provides aid to those who lack the freedom of mobility in our communities and around the world. Whether councils are presenting wheelchairs to local veterans and neighbors in need or donating funds to benefit those abroad, mobility brings with it independence and dignity. Obtained at discounted prices, these wheelchairs change the lives of their recipients. Working with the Global Wheelchair Mission is a perfect opportunity to put your faith into action and involve the entire community in the rewarding charitable work done by your council.

Program Requirements

Councils are required to donate the equivalent of 10 wheelchairs at $150 per chair to the American Wheelchair Mission or the Canadian Wheelchair Foundation, by raising funds through council, parish or community activities. Report activity using the online Program Report Form (#10784).
