Program Purpose

To increase blood donations and organ donors within our councils, their parishes and their local communities.  This is the one NC KofC Life Program component where there is no KofC Supreme component.  The NC Dtate Council felt it important enough to create our own. Suggestion is to have an Organ Donation signup once per year or two at your parish; suggestion is to have 1-4 Blood Donation Drives per year at your parish.

Program Overview

Giving physical parts of one’s own body to enhance someone else’s life is a very demonstrable expression of “giving life, sharing one’s life”.  This component of our NC Life Program can also be considered a part of the KofC Community Program, helping others within the community.  It entails providing the resources and direction for NC Councils to hold blood drives and sign-up parishioners as organ donors, using the existing organizations, websites, and processes within the NC community.

Your NC Chairman, Life Sharing, can help you to set up blood drives and organ donor signup events.  Available on the NC KofC website is online information available to understand the value in giving blood to the donor, to review the Catholic position on organ donation, to plan the steps to set up a blood drive, etc. There are two primary statewide organizations to conduct blood drives for your council.  The first is the American Red Cross (800-733-2767) that will provide you the phone number for the local chapter.  Website is https://www.redcross.org/local/north-carolina.html. The second is the Blood Connection (800-392-6551) that will give you the phone number for the local chapter as well.  Website is https://thebloodconnection.org/contact/north-carolina-centers/. There are other organizations to use within NC for blood donation such as UNC Medical Centers or Oneblood.

The NC organization to register to donate organs is Donate Life NC at P.O. Box 5536 Cary, NC 27512.  They have an online form to register at: https://www.donatelifenc.org/.  You can also signup to donate organs at the DMV whenever you renew your driver’s license.

Date: Consider Organ Donation Day February 14, 2024 and Blood Donation Day June 14, 2024 or surrounding weekends for Drive.

Program Requirements

Sponsor a blood drive at your parish or a drive to register organ donors.  Each unit of blood can save up to three people.  Each organ donation (at the donor's death) can benefit up to 8 people.
